Fever is the third studio album by Bullet For My Valentine. The album was released on April 26, 2010 in the UK and April 27, 2010 in the US.

Recording process[]

In April 2009, the band canceled a few South African tour dates[1] and entered the studio with producer Don Gilmore. The band picked Gilmore because of his extensive history in the music scene. Matt Tuck said it was "kind of weird working with someone else", but revealed he was happy with the end product.[2]

In mid-2009, after having finished recording the album's music[3], the band took a break to play a few shows.[4] At Mayhem Festival, they performed a new song, "Your Betrayal"[5], although it was different from the version that later appeared on the album.[citation needed]

Frontman Matt Tuck revealed that he took a different approach to songwriting this time around. Normally, he would write the vocal parts after the instrumentals were already done. This time, he tried to write them at the same time. Gilmore was reportedly very harsh on the band and pushed them to their limit. Tuck said that at first the band felt they had messed up and have should have recorded the album without a producer, but as time progressed they could see why Gilmore was doing what he was doing.[6] Tuck said in an interview "if it could be better, you have to do it again", referring to the band having to re-record some of the music.[7] He also mentioned that they rewrote some songs up to five times because Gilmore didn't think they were good enough. According to Tuck, recording the vocals took longer than everything else on the record.[8]

In an interview with Guitar Edge, Tuck said that the band's objective for the album was to please themselves, rather than the critics. He also said he "adores"[9] the album, calling it their "strongest record to date"[2].

Musical style[]

The album has fewer unclean vocals, guitar riffs and guitar solos than the band's previous works, making it more akin to hard rock than the melodic metalcore and thrash metal of their older records. Jason James revealed that the band tried to make the album a bit more "easy-listening", saying they adopted a "less-is-more" mentality and didn't try to "cram it full with riffs".[10]

Matt Tuck reflected on the album in 2020, saying it was one of his favorite Bullet For My Valentine albums and that it "elevated [them] from a band that was doing really well to a band that was doing very well".[11]
